breeding for resistance

rice plant could be made resistant to pest and diseases by breeding done manually by crossing one cultivar to another in the green house and later testing the outcome in the field where pest and diseasen occurred. In that manner we could obtained resistant cultivars by the proses of elimination
the breeding procedure is called pedigree breeding technique.
for instance at one time we used Ir5 or Ir8 and crossed it with TKM6 and select the breeding lines obtained through pedigree methods  and test the offsprings in the hopperburn area. Those pedigree which survived the test is further breed for multiple resistance by another cross to Bengawan for resistance to Bacterial leaf blight diseases. etc
